How To Bollywood Dance
So what is Bollywood Dancing?
Bollywood is the name given to the Mumbai based Hindi language film industry in India.
When combined with other film industries such as, Tamil, Teluga, Bengali, Malayam, and Kannada, it is considered to be the largest in the world in terms of number of films produced, and also maybe the number of tickets sold.
The term Bollywood was created by conflating Bombay (the city now called Mumbai) and Hollywood, the world famous centre of the United States film industry.
Bollywood films are usually musicals.
Few movies are made without at least one song and dance number.
Indian audiences expect full value for their money; they want songs and dances, love interest, comedy and dare devil thrills, all mixed up in a three hour extravaganza with intermission.
Such movies are known as Masala movies, after the spice mixture masala. Like masala, these movies have everything.
Bollywood dancing is a commercial name for modern Indian dancing. It's a combination of classical Indian dance, which is the base, folk dancing such as Bhangra and sometimes it also has a Latino and Arabic influence.
It's fun and very expressive and there's a lot of deep meaning behind the music in the films, the plethora of such films which now abound from the Bollywood film industry have lead to an upsurge of people wanting to lean how to Bollywood dance. You can actually express what the music means through the graceful movement of the body.
Here's a short video below which will give you a taster of how colurful Bollywood dancing can be and just as importantly, how the music itself makes you want to get up and dance.
The stills shown are taken from the film 'Aloo Chaat', and are from a scene which depicted a Bollywood Bhangra wedding dance.
The music makes the dancing both fun, colourful and natural as well as being lively, and is a superb example of Bollywood music.
If you feel tempted to get up and dance along to the music – go on, why not? - You know you want to :-) nobody's watching - so have some fun :-) enjoy.
